If you are looking to save on your electric and heating bills and at the same time save the world, then solar energy is for you. There are residential solar power systems available in stores and online. They are ready to install in your roof or yard.

These systems are not that hard to understand. Solar energy from the sun is captured with the use of solar panels. These panels then convert the energy for household use. You can choose what kind of energy you need from the sun, whether heat or electricity. For photovoltaic panels that convert sunlight into electricity, this can be achieved through special atoms that act as semiconductors in an electric field. For solar heating panels, the sun’s heat is used as a hot water system for the entire household and can be attached to a traditional existing heating system. All this is happening inside solar wafers that are arranged in a module inside a solar panel. These panels are then arrayed side by side in a number of grids, the size of the whole system depending on how much wattage you need. The converted energy is then used around the house where one of these  systems is installed.

There are different ways of installing these systems but the most widely used method is by putting them on a roof. Ideally, the roof must be fully facing the sun most times of the day and especially during the hottest hours. No shade from trees and tall buildings must fall on the installed residential solar power systems. Usually this means a south facing area. If our roof is not suitable for this, then another way is to install a trellis in your yard or garden. As always with solar panels, full sun and no shade is required for maximum power. Aside from the aforementioned solar panels systems come with complementary devices. A heating system comes with its own cylinder, pipes, and a thermostat. A PV or photovoltaic system is more complicated and comes with cables and wires, inverters, switchgears, and meters. Once they are installed, these  systems are very low maintenance and are no trouble at all.

Sometimes, the package comes with its own meter that you can install or connect to the local power company’s meter and then to the national grid. This is called metering. It is another benefit of having your own source of energy, for it helps bring down the monthly electric bill. The reason for this is that the surplus electricity you make will be plowed on to the power grid and your meter will turn backwards, thus the monthly savings when your billing comes. For off-the-grid residential solar power systems, those that are not connected to the power grid due to remoteness, some systems offer a battery system instead. These operate by storing excess electricity generated by the panels during full sun, then storing them for use later on during the night or on bad weather days.

Rebates are sometimes offered when installing alternative energy sources. Ask your local companies and city or town authorities about this, for they offer considerable savings.
